**In addition to a candidate's 'political readiness' to serve as president, the ability to convey those issues to the public also carries significant weight. When answering these two questions, really focus on the language used and topics he focuses on in his speech.
1. How does this speech generate support for one party over the other?
2. After hearing this speech, would you be inspired to vote for this nominee? Why or why not?
1. In Obama's acceptance speech, he used a lot of loaded language to try to sway as many people away from McCain by constantly comparing him to Bush, whose approval rate was at it's lowest at the time. It was a smart move because he united his whole party behind that one idea.
ReplyDelete2. I wouldn't be persuaded to vote for Obama after hearing his speech because he seems to be blaming big business and George Bush for all of the economic problems in America. He wanted to give tax breaks to only the businesses that are still in America, which would alienate all of the other businesses that were forced to leave the country due to the outrageous taxes imposed upon them. If he were to lower corporate income tax to a reasonable level for all businesses, job growth would just explode!
1. In Obama’s speech he compared McCain and Bush trying to make people view them equally. I think this was a smart move on Obama because to the government at the time of the speech was a low because of Obama’s opposing party and it gave his party the upper hand.
ReplyDelete2. I think that at the time the speech was given it would have had made me really think about voting for the other party. Americans always tend to judge negative first and Obama did a great job in creating a negative image from the opposing party in return creating a positive one for himself.
Is there anything in particular about what McCain or Obama said, or HOW they said it, that made you think, "This man now has my vote"?
ReplyDelete1. When president obama compared the republicans to all of americas problems he had the upperhand to the democratic party making all of america want someone new to lead them to "Change".
ReplyDelete2. no, i am a republican and will only vote democratically if i strongly agree with the person. Mr. obama seemed to high on cloud 9 with his speech, mand didnt appeal to the common man like the republicans try to do!
From reading (or listening to) John McCain's acceptance speech, do you think he would appeal to the common man more than Obama? What separates one speech from the other?
ReplyDelete1. President Obama kept bringing up George Bush's name. He was saying that his ideas and systems were flawed and that the U.S. has had enough of his control and are looking to make a change.
ReplyDelete2. I would definitely have voted for Barack Obama. I did not agree with what George Bush had done the previous 8 years. He did multiple things that put our country in a downfall. When Obama came in, his goal was to make a change. He did that. Our economy has recently started to increase instead of decrease that Bush led us into. The War in Iraq has recently ended and troops are being withdrawn instead of continuing battle on innocent people of the Mid-East and sending more and more troops that aren't needed at this time. Obama has created a change for our better. He swayed me his way in 2008.

The republicans were used as a stepping stone to jolt Obama to victory with this speech Obama's comment "Eight is Enough" allowed people to accept that voting democrat would be change, and maybe a change for the better. He also attacked Bush-McCain foreign policy which hurt the re-election of another Republican.
ReplyDeleteBeing a Democrat this speech inspired me to vote for chang in Washington which was Obama's leading slogan throught his campaign. It brought up the topic of nation wide health care which I believe in, aswell as renewable sources of energy. O-O-O-Obama

McCain certainty appeals to many folks as you listen to his speech. He does appeal to the Republican party, but he mainly talks about how he is driven by the people, not a party.
ReplyDeleteAt the time I would have definitely considered McCain, but Obama had a lot going for him. Not to mention that many people disapproved of the Iraq war and McCain wanted to continue.McCain certainly had good ideas, but I still would have voted for Obama. He had a stronger campaign, end of story.
Kristina
John McCain is very appealing to a lot of people whether they are republican or democratic what he says should make many people happy. He talked about how he does this for the people and not just for a certain party. No matter what he will stand in honor of us as the people instead of just to be there for the government.
ReplyDeleteReading what John McCain said to the nation I definitelly believe that I would have voted for him. But on the contrary Obama had a lot of appealing things too. It would have been difficult because they both had amazing ideas and beliefs, but I still would have voted McCain
-Kasie Casconi
McCain was liked by people of both parties because he was in it for the citizens of America not for his own personal gain. McCain said he will represent the people.
ReplyDeleteI would have voted for McCain expacially looking in hindsight because everyone says obama is brining change.... What change, the econmy is still in the tank and is not increasing very much if at all. And Obama hasnt fullfilled what he had said when he was running that change campaign, nothing has changed everything has stayed the same, he said troops will have left all occupied areas with in his first 18 months as president, Were tired of his empty promises, his word has no creadibility -dalton
Obama stomped on the republicans and everyone wasw for him because he did such a good job with presenting how he was gonna "change" America
ReplyDeleteI would have voted for Obama because of how he was going to change washington. he did a great job presenting himself and his ideas considering all of the crap he was getting
Andrew
Considering what both candidates presented, I would have voted for Obama on the fact that he was going to try to put a stop to the war while McCain wanted to continue. The war had been going on for too long when there wasn't any real facts that would have justified the war to begin with, thus it needed to end and McCain wasn't going to do that.

Throughout Obama's speech, he presented a view that people in America could relate to. His speech had an air of persuasion toward the people, it screamed: I'm just like you, an American who wants to see change, I have a growing family, I grew up just as all of you have and I have the same ideas too. I am affected each day as you all are. So I am prepared to embark upon changes that Bush failed at; I am prepared to make this country better for all who live here.
ReplyDeleteObama is a good speaker who could fork out speeches that could make society think: hey, this sounds right, this is what we want, he's just like us, he'll get us what we want.
For this was probably a strong factor to his win. -Brittany
1) In McCain's acceptance speech, he really focuses on how he works for the people and not himself. He also uses the term "we" instead of "I" to unite the Republican party in order tackle big issues
ReplyDelete2)I would absolutely have voted for John McCain instead of Obama. McCain is a real person with real ideas and strong morals. Obama is just a smooth talker who said the right things at the right time but has never done anything to follow through. I feel that he is very fake and is influenced by his money backers.
Kean- After reading Mcains acceptance speech i realized that he put a big focus on puting down Obama. He basically did this by saying That he was going to do things and Obama wasnt.Everything he said he was going to do he said that Obama couldnt.
ReplyDelete- He brought up some good points and used good wording that may influence me if I were there listening to him speek. He dosnt reall say anything that would stray me away from sticking with him.
1. In John McCain's nomination acceptance speech he may lean towards the Republican party on the issues, but in general the way he talks he is speaking to all parties. He explains that he doesn't work for a party, but that he works for the people and what the people need.
ReplyDelete2. I think after hearing this speech I would support John McCain. He seems to really care about the people and what the people need whether it's the popular decision or not. He really cares for the middle class.
1) McCain doesn't just appeal the the Republican party, he appeals to everyone. He believes that the government should help the people and work for them and not against them. The only way that he appeals to the Republican party more is because of the issues he supports.
ReplyDelete2)After reading McCain's speech I would be inclined to vote for him. He wants what is best for the American people above all else. It is for this reason alone that I would vote for him. He is all for the middle class and helping them out.
Crystal
1. he says that it isn't governmnets fault there are problems, but governments problem in how they respind to it. he says that this is a failure in policies on George Bush's part.
ReplyDelete2.i'd have to say that i would have voted for obama if i heard this speech, but would have regretted it based on the outcome. everything that obama said was just a bunch of crap. he's just a good talking, and said the right things at the right time.
